Position Overview:

The Senior Leadership of Learning and Development, who will report to the Chief People Officer, will be responsible for leading the management and improvement of national Learning and Development strategies and systems to prepare City Year staff and corps to execute against our long term goals and expansion over the next five years.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Integrated Learning and Development Strategy
    • Lead on development and execution of an integrated Learning and Development strategy for the National City Year network.
    • Implement a learning and development strategy that aligns with City Year’s immediate and long-term talent strategies. In partnership with all content managers, lead on implementing and developing a learning and collaborative environment for our community of practitioners.
    • Finalize and implement a Learning Management System (LMS) to provide online and classroom based learning solutions which connect to the current technology platforms.
    • Lead ongoing learning, development, and training initiatives to increase understanding and adoption of organizational, integrated systems.
  • Enhancement of Learning and Development Tools and Initiatives
    • Collaborate and partner to:
      • Enhance current learning and development initiatives.
      • Identify new opportunities to meet existing and projected business needs.
      • Enhance and standardize training services for the network through product development and management
    • Guide and support the direction, planning, and coordination of all learning objectives, initiatives, and instructional strategies to leverage the best methodologies for training delivery (i.e. web-based, classroom, etc.) and ensure organizational alignment.
    • Lead annual needs analysis and determine what changes and enhancements are needed for current curriculum. Also, determine what products and tools to develop in-house vs. out-source or purchase.
    • Partnering with Information Technology to identify opportunities to leverage existing and new technologies to reach a distributed employee base. Responsible for the implementation and management of a central repository for all training and development content, and capture data on an organizational and individual basis to track training and developmental progress (LMS and other e-platforms). 
    • Manage fiscal aspects of learning and development, while meeting or exceeding budget standards, and organize measurement of return on investment for learning and development programs.
    • Build and manage relationships with critical partners, internally and externally, to lift City Year’s capacity and resources for learning and development.
  • Team Management
    • Lead team of Learning and Development staff members towards their individual goals and departmental objectives.
  • Summer Academy
    • Collaboratively lead on execution of City Year’s national, week-long training conference (Summer Academy) for 1200+ of City Year’s staff and senior corps members.
    • Lead and direct Summer Academy’s Learning and Development vision and strategy.
    • Help determine themes and goals and ensure content excellence. Intentionally integrate and demonstrate City Year’s culture and values through all aspects of Summer Academy; illustrate how these components serve our mission, identity and advance our long term strategy/organizational goals.
    • Coordinate and facilitate discussions, seeking input and guidance from national and site leadership for the successful planning and implementation of all Summer Academy programming. Lead evaluative measures to develop appropriate program evaluation tools.
    • Oversee, develop, and manage communication, logistics and operations including, venue relationship, the schedule, accommodations and transportation, budget, information distribution/creation of materials, etc.
    • Keep others informed on venue and budget parameters; track and drive key deadlines. 
    • Oversee management of teams responsible for Summer Academy event and curriculum planning.
  • Executive Conferences
    • Plan and deliver executive training conferences for City Year’s Executive staff and national leadership, the National Executive Director and Leadership Conference (NELC).  

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Human Resources, Organizational Development or Training/Development/Education. Masters’ degree preferred. Certifications in professional L&D/Training organizations are of interest, but not required.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience working in leadership roles in learning, development, and training strategies and systems.
  • Experience with training or program development at a national organization.
  • Accustom to organizational growth and experience working and achieving results within change management.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, act, and motivate in order to translate business performance gaps into learning and development strategies and action.
  • Exceptional track record developing and delivering learning strategies and initiatives.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with all levels of employees as well as superior facilitation skills.
  • City Year knowledge (understanding of and commitment to City Year’s values and culture).
  • Collaborates effectively with others to identify and resolve issues.
  • Able to nurture, guide and motivate the Learning and Development staff to effectively deliver programs that support business results.
